Weekends

We love weekends around here.  That means time to play, relax, be together and have fun! We could not have asked for a more beautiful weekend in January than we just had. I've even got our screen door open as I'm typing this.  Crazy to think that just a couple of weeks ago we had 4 inches of snow on the ground and today it's almost 70.

Friends.

We were all so excited to have some very special guests come over last night.  One of my very best friends from college and her two adorable girls came over to play! It was such a blast watching the kids play together.  We really hope they get to do it more often! ;)
Amy and Bella
 Madison fixing up the dollhouse...
RJ and Bella - they had a ball together!
I wonder what kind of conversations these two will have?
The whole gang trying to settle down for some movie time and popcorn.

100.

The 100th day of school was celebrated this week at RJ's school. The kindegarten classes were assigned a big homework project. They were to collect 100 of something and then create a unique way to display the collection. We decided on Skittles. Easy to collect and count. We tossed around several ideas, but decided on a baseball field! RJ was excited about the whole process and led the way during the entire project. He was excited to share his creation with his class.

First step: sorting out the colors
Next step: Counting out all the colors

Next step: Coloring the front page of project

Last step: gluing down all 100 Skittles!

Before and After.

The fireplace mantle project is about 95% done! We just have some touch up work to do in the corners. I am so pleased with the transformation. It definitely adds some color appeal to our so neutral living room. Here are the pictures:

Before
After I was hesitant for just a second once we started painting, but I'm so glad we tried this. Who knows what we will tackle next!

Being crafty.

I've been feeling 'crafty' this past week... maybe it's all this free time I've had on my hands with snow breaks from school and holidays and short work weeks. Seems to be getting my mind recharged... yay, feels nice! We have been up to all sorts of fun things around our house lately... (hence, the reason I haven't posted in almost a week!)

Nothing crafty about this post but thought the kiddos were too cute
as we were leaving Red Lobster on Friday night...
Our Valentine's Day hand print project
My fabric flower necklace - idea from Little Miss Momma. Definitely making more of these... especially after seeing this last post.

And then the big one... drumroll.... yes, we have started another DIY project at our house. Yes, scary I know, considering we had trouble putting on a screen door. But, we were inspired after visiting a friend's house for dinner. We used a gift card at Lowe's for Christmas and came home with all of this. We are....
...painting our fireplace mantle BLACK. It turns out to not be the one day project we had hoped... but that's okay. It definitely needed some work. New caulking because it had started cracking and paint was chipping... we really like the black so far. We just have some touch up work and sanding and painting still left to do. It is going to look awesome by Friday... updates to come.

Taking a moment.

We ventured out again yesterday for some more fun sledding action. I can't even believe how old he looks to me in this picture. We walked around for a little bit to admire how pretty the snow looks. I don't think I will ever get tired of seeing how beautiful everything looks covered in snow. (Probably because we usually only get snow 1 - 2 times a year!)

Pinterest

I am officially a new member of Pinterest.

It is visually a pinboard for the internet. You can pin any online image into your own board categories. I think of it as bulletin boards all divided up into my head with all these images floating around. Now I can visually see them all!! Love it! And I have the links to trace them!

It is a new, up-and-coming website. I had to be invited to join, but I'm so glad I tried it. Plus, you can follow other people's pins and repin them. Just like a bulletin board. I love it! (Especially since we have like 4 -5 bulletin boards in our house... I'm a big fan of seeing things first hand.)

Here are my boards so far... it's definitely a new adventure. It is still a work in progress. Something fun to do while I'm cooped up in this house for 3 days with no school.

We have snow! (and ice)

We are going on our second day out of school! Yes, it is wonderful to be home and not at school right now, but eventually we are going to have to make these days up... not so fun. The kids have done great while we are 'cooped' up in the house. We ventured out yesterday and got to enjoy the snow/ice. The kids had a blast with our make-shift sleds... this is not the north after all, we aren't prepared for full-out sledding. The kids used our boogey boards from the beach for sleds. (But I think we will be acquiring some after this weekend!)

Staying inside

We are staying inside this weekend with the fire on! It has gotten super cold here over the last few days. We are expecting some snow and ice tonight so school has already been closed for Monday... fingers crossed for Tuesday also!

Here's a little bit of what we have been up to...

making hairclips from my grandmother's handmade flowers

A picnic lunch in RJ's room while watching The Backyardigans

Coloring and stamping in mommy's craft room

Busy having car wars with bad guys

Time Capsule

Just spotted this lovely idea from the gals at eighteen25 (if you have not seen their blog - it is a definite wealth of ideas and inspiration!)

This is a great idea... I can just see it out on our kitchen counter and would be such a fun thing for the kids to get involved with also! Can't wait to get started...

it's a time capsule! (original idea from kelli crowe's blog.)
take yourself a jar.
put a cute little family picture in the front.
then display it somewhere where it's easy to get to.
then... throughout the year drop fun little items that represent your year.
theirs included. movie ticket stubs. a silly band. hospital wrist band. popsicle stick with a joke on it. a yugio card. a "lucky rock" from a vacation. love note. a family business card. and more!

I'll be digging through our mason jar collection today to find one suitable for this!

Ahhh... one of each, please?!

I have never shopped at Talbots before, but I found these lovely boots there over Christmas while spending my gift cards online.... my new fave color - camel.

But, of course, I would like to have one of each of all the following:

A girl can dream, right?!

Special package...

I was so excited to receive this nice, shiny, clean, white box yesterday!! The products look amazing! I can't wait to tear into everything! Still finishing up a few journaling cards from my 2010 album, but never fear I have already starting saving my photos for this year. I even got a friend along to join the fun with me! Thanks, Jess! (AND a big Happy Birthday to you!!) I also ordered a set of the vertical pages for the album this time. I really like all the options that Project Life has for everyone!

One Little Word for 2011

C H A L L E N G E

I've found my word... maybe it found me, not sure I'm all that "deep" about it. But this one word did seem to stick out to me over and over again. Definition: 1. a call or summons to engage in any contest, as of skill, strength, etc. 2. something that by its nature or character serves as a call to battle, contest, special effort, etc. Synonyms: dare, bid, invite, stimulate, demanding, investigate.

I think this quote is what sealed the deal for me:

"Relate with others, but relate with yourself also.
Love others, but love yourself also.
Go out! - the world is beautiful, adventurous; it is a challenge, it enriches.
Go out fearlessly, there is nothing to lose, there is everything to gain."
-Osho

I challenge myself to be a better wife, mother, daughter and friend.
I challenge myself to be more patient with my kids (at home and at school.)
I challenge myself to run a marathon.
I challenge myself to get outside of my comfort zone.
I challenge my body to push the limits.
I challenge myself to take more pictures.
I challenge myself to take better pictures.
I challenge my mind to never stop learning.

The list can seriously go on and on, but I have set many challenges for myself already. I'm looking forward to all my FUN along the way!

New Year... new projects

Happy New Year! The kids are on to their own projects... painting, coloring, creating... love it!

I've got two projects running this year... of course, one is just not good enough. I have already ordered my 3rd in the Project Life series by Becky Higgins. Absolutely love this one and it really has changed my idea of scrapbooking daily life. I'm also enrolling in a class by Ali Edwards, One Little Word. I'm still struggling with my word for this year. I'm stuck between patience, discover, strive, appreciate and balance. All things that have a particular meaning to me and my life. I still haven't found that one word that just jumps out at me though. I have not participated before but I'm excited about the possibilities. Check these projects out - just reading these two ladies daily blogs provides a lot of inspiration to me.
